As we prepare for our upcoming gala, “Back to the Farm,” we reflect on how this gala has grown. I’ve watched for 15 years this annual event transform. What started as a local fair with breakfast and boutique, later added silent and live auctions, moved to the church with a dinner and a little larger benefit auction, then to the Planes of Fame Air Museum, a country club and the Fairplex in between, to the last three years needing the largest hotel space around to house over 100 auction items and a show, dinner, and more for over 500 people!

I was born on October 23, 1954. Yep, yep last year was my 70th birthday! I moved to Salem straight from my parents’ house in 1982. I lived in Salem South home [Salem’s first community home next to our main campus] and I would go over to the main campus on the weekends to hang out in the activity center with Bobby, Karen, Theron and Regan. I really enjoy all the friendships.

A warm welcome to a Salem “Hero” to many Salem residents and our local community, Founder and Executive Director of To The Pointe Dance Productions in Chino, Lindsay Dixon! Affectionately known as TTP, this faith-based professional dance studio has been a special place for 100s of Salem residents over the past 21 years.

The Salem journey has a different beginning for each family. For Cindi it began with a major life transition and move. Despite the change, in her heart she will always be Nicole’s mom. She knew letting her daughter grow in her next steps of independence meant a new direction.

My brother Theron first connected with Salem when they had a school on their property in Ontario. This would have been in the late 1960s. My parents wanted Theron to benefit from the educational resources available to him and other children with Down syndrome.

Salem recently welcomed two new residents, and I’m excited to share with you the story of how God provided for them.

When Marc was born in 1970 the obstetrician told us that we should put Marc away and forget about him. His life expectancy was about 30 years and he should be placed in the state hospital for developmentally disabled people. That was not an option for us.
